A rare temple for the God who keeps track of our deeds - Chitragupta temple, Kanchipuram

Chitragupta temple is a unique and rare temple in Kanchipuram city of South Inda. This small temple said to be built during the Chola period in the 9th century CE, is located in Nellukara street near the Kanchipuram bus stand.

Chitragupta, the younger brother of Yama, the God of Death, is believed to keep track of all human beings' good and evil deeds. Everyone goes to heaven or hell based on the records maintained by him. You cannot find a temple or shrine for Chitragupta anywhere except in Kanchipuram.

It is a known fact that nowadays, devotees throng to get blessings of nine planets (Navagrahas). As Chitragupta is the Lord of Ketu, one of the nine planets, devotees of Navagrahas visit this temple.

The sanctum enshrines the stone icon of Chitragupta. He is found along with his consort, Karni Ambal, as metal icons. There are sub-shrines of Iyappa, Vishnu Durga, Navagrahas and Ramalinga Adigal, all are later additions.

Happy travelling.
