An unknown temple at the heart of the city - Egmore Ardhanareeswarar Temple, Chennai

Egmore is a popular area in Chennai, the gateway to South India. Egmore is popular mainly due to its Railway Station that connects to many major cities in India. About one km from Egmore Railway station, near the famous Dasprakash Hotel on Poonamallee High Road, the ancient temple of Ardhanareeswarar Temple is located. The following small lane after Dasaprakash Hotel will take you to this ancient temple.

Egmore Ardhanareeswarar Temple, Chennai

Even though it is believed that the famous saint Tirunavukkarasar has sung about this temple, it remains unknown to most Chennai citizens today. However, the temple's current structure does not seem too old, but the presiding deity is ancient. It seems Tirunavukkarasar refers to this place as 'Ezhum Oor', meaning 'awakening'. Hence, this temple becomes a Devara Vaippu Sthalam.

The main shrine temple enshrines Shiva, named Ardhanareeswara, in the form of Linga. The name of the Goddess is Tiripura Sundarai. There is a separate shrine for Lakshmi Narayana. The icons of Surya, Sukra, Navagraha, Ganesha and Murugan are also found in this small temple.

Happy travelling.
