Nandikeswarar Temple - Bull Temple of Chennai

Chennai, the gateway to South India, has a lot of important tourist sites, including temples. Tiruvottiyur is a locality located in the northern part of Chennai, which has Tyagarajar temple, the oldest and the biggest temple in and around the city. Apart from Tyagarajar temple, there are a few ancient temples too located in Tiruvottiyur. Nandikeswarar temple is one of those ancient temples situated in Tiruvottiyur.


 Nandikeswarar temple, located at the north car street (northern side of Thyagarajar temple) in Tiruvottiyur, is around 600 years old. This is one of the rare temples dedicated to Nandi, the bull god, the vahana of Lord Shiva. You can find a few temples of bull God in the neighboring Karnataka state. However, they all have giant sculptures of Bull as the deities. However, this temple in Tiruvottiyur has a small icon of Nandi in human form (called Adhikara Nandi). Nandi is standing with folded hands as if he is worshiping the Lord.



This small temple is only known to some, including the people living in Tiruvottiyur. The sad part is that this temple is kept open for a short time daily.

Putlur Angala Parameswari Temple - Chennai

Angala Parameswari Temple in Putlur, near  Chennai  city of South India, is a unique temple. The Goddess is in the form of a pregnant woman in this temple. The icon of Angala Parameswari is believed to be self-manifested, called swayambhu.  As per the legend, a village head tortured a poor for borrowed money. The poor was forced to plough an infertile land. While ploughing the ground full of rocks, the villager noticed that blood was oozing out from a particular place. There, he discovered the image of the Goddess. A 17th century Dargah with healing power - Mount Road Dargah, Chennai, India

Mount Road or Anna Salai is one of the most happening places in  Chennai . There are two famous Islamic shrines on Mount Road – one is  Thousands Light mosque . The other one is Dargah-e-Hazrath Syed Moosa Shah Qadri Baghdadi (Rahmatullah Alaihi), also known as Mount Road Dargah. It is the most popular Dargah across the city. It draws devotees of all faiths and all walks of life. Especially every Thursday, a large number of devotees gather to the Dargah. A lot of city-based celebrities regularly visit the site.
