Tondiarpet Arunachaleswarar Temple - Chennai, India

Tondiarpet is a densely populated area of North Chennai city of South India. A lesser known Shiva temple is located at a distance of 0.5 km from Apollo Hospital in Tondiarpet area of Chennai.

Tondiarpet Arunachaleswarar temple was built in 1779 CE. The east facing small temple does not have a tower.

The sanctum enshrines a small Shiv Linga, who is named as Arunachaleswar. Adjacent to the sanctum, the shrine of Goddess Abitakujambal is found. The flag staff and Nandi are found facing towards the sanctum.

At the entrance of the temple, the idols of Nardana Ganesh and Subramanya are located. Kodi Mara Vinayaka is found near the flag staff.


The prakara has the idols of Bhairav, Surya, Ganesh, Nagas and Nalvar. There is a shrine for Maha Ganapati and another one for Subramanya with Valli and Devasena.

Ganesha, Dakshinamurti, Vishnu, Brahma and Durga are found as the niche images.  Chandikeswara is found in his usual location.

The wall surrounding the Abitakujambal shrine has the niche images of Ganambikai, Roudri, Vaishnavi, Brahmi, Chamundeeswari and Chandikeswari.

There are separate shrines for Nataraj with Sivakami, Somaskanda and Utsav idols. The outer corridor has the idol of Durga on the wall. The shrines of Shaneeswara and Navagraha are also found in the outer corridor of the temple.
