Vadapalani Adimoolanatha Perumal Temple - Chennai, South India

Vadapalani is one of the most happening areas of Chennai city, the gateway to South India. Vadapalani is mainly famous for its Murugan temple. There is a small but beautiful temple dedicated for Lord Vishnu opposite to Vadapalani Murugan temple, which remains unknown to the most of Chennai people.

Vishnu is named as Adi Moolanatha Perumal in this small old temple. Vadapalani Adimoolanatha Perumal temple, located opposite to Vadapalani Murugan temple, seems to be comparatively older; however, nothing is known about its history or legend.

The main shrine has the big idol of Adimoolanatha Perumal along with Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi. The deity is in the sitting posture. Garud is found in a small shrine facing towards the main shrine. The utsav idols of Adimoolanatha Perumal with his two consorts and Andal are also found in the main shrine.

Adi Lakshmi, the Goddess of the temple, is found in a separate shrine in the corridor. The idol of Adi Lakshmi looks very attractive.

  1. hello, this is a nice article and seems to be the only article in the entire WWW about Adhi moola natha perumal temple. its great that you could put this together. So when i finally landed in chennai i had even made it a point to visit this temple since i always make a visit to the vadapalani murugan temple. but i was met with utter disappointment when i heard the temple has been closed for past few months & no poojas were being performed there! why is this so? anyways - i had to content myself with inspecting the temple from whatever is seen from outside the locked gate! would be awesome if you cud post pictures of this temple inside view!

    1. Hi thanvi,

Even i'm curious to know about why the temple remains in such a neglected state. Can you provide some details as to when you visited the temple recently? And do the local people about who performs pooja at these temple, their details etc. Many times, i feel it's our responsibility to show care towards such temples. So any info you could provide will be of great help.

  5. The goddess Lakshmi is adorned here in a very beautiful and appreciable manner. Meanwhile those who visit the murugan temple also visit the nearby Sidhar Samadhi. Its just a 2minute walk.
