Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari Temple - Chennai, India

Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari is believed to be an incarnation of the goddess Parvati. There is a temple of Kanyaka Parameswari in Chennai, the gateway to South India.

In 10th century CE, a girl child was born to Kusuma Sresti, a Vysya, in Penugonda in Andhra Pradesh. She was named as Vasavi. The Chalukya king Vishnu Vardhana wanted to marry her. To avoid the king, she and 102 Vysya couples sacrificed their lives in fire. People believed that she was not an ordinary girl, but Kanyaka Parameswari, the incarnation of Parvati.

Even though the main temple of Kanyaka Parameswari is located in Andhra Pradesh state, there is a separate temple for Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari in Parrys area near the old Kothawal Chavadi Market. This is an area where a lot of Andhra - Telugu speaking population is residing.

Kanyaka Parameswari temple is one of the oldest temples of Chennai city. In those days, it would be very difficult to get into the temple as the temple entrance was facing the busy wholesale market. After the market was shifted to Koyambedu, the temple looks more elegant and the area appears to be calm.

Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari temple is a small temple with a beautiful idol of Goddess in the sanctum. There is a separate shrine for the processional (utsav) idol of Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari. Navagraha also found in this temple.

Happy travelling.
