Madhya Kailash

Madhya Kailash is one of the most popular temples in Chennai city in South India. This temple is located in the beginning of the most happening place of Chennai - IT corridor aka Old Mahabalipuram High Road. To be precise, this temple is located at the junction of IT corridor and Sardar Patel Road opposite to Kasturiba Nagar MRTS train station.

Although the name of the temple is Madhya Kailash, this temple is not dedicated to Lord Shiva; this temple is dedicated to his son Lord Ganesha. The temple having a small tower also has Dhwajatambha (flag staff) and bali peetha opposite to the sanctum. The sanctum enshrines the presiding deity Vijaya Ananda Vinayakar. In fact there are two idols in the sanctum - one big beautiful idol of Ganesha and a small idol of Ganesha in the front side. The outer area of the sanctum has two bronze idols (utsav idols) of Ganesh - both are too beautiful - one is Ananda Vinayak and another is Nardana Vinayak (dancing Ganesh). Outside the sanctum but within the Ardha Mandap, there are six bronze idols of Lord Murugan called as Arupadai Veedu - the forms of Murugan in his six famous adobes. The idols are placed elegantly one after the other.

Other shrines in the temple:
1) Shweta Murti shrine - Shiv Linga and Parvati idols; two bronze idols of Shiv-Parvati; bronze idols of Appar and Adi Shankaracharya
2) Atyandaprabhu shrine - this is the highlight of this temple where you can find the bronze idol of half Ganeshand half Hanuman together as single body
3) Aditya shrine - this shrine is in the form of a rath (car) with wheels; seven horses and Arunan are present as if they are riding the car; inside the shrine you can find Suryadev (Sun God); this shrine also houses the bronze idols of Ram, Lakshman, Sita and Hanuman
4) Abirami shrine
5) Hanuman shrine
6) Rajagopala Swamy (Krishna) shrine; the bronze idols of Lakshmi-Narasimha are also found in this shrine; Krishna with cows is present in the form of bronze idol; the wall surrounding the shrine has the niche images of Paravasudeva, Purushottama, Suka and Markandeya
7) Swarna Bhairav shrine
8) Navagraha shrine

Other idols in the temple:
1) Durga idol in the prakara (corridor)
2) Dakshinamurti, Lingodbhava and Brahma in the wall surrounding Sweta Murti shrine
3) Vaishnavi
4) A pillar with four Goddesses

It's definitely a unique temple with a lot of idols and shrines in different form. Don't miss this temple.

Happy travelling.
