Gauri Kund - Jammu and Kashmir

Gauri Kund is a small site with Hindu mythological background. It is located in Jammu and Kashmir state of India. The nearby important tourist sites are Sudh Mahadev temple, Mantalai and Patnitop.

Gauri Kund is located on the road connecting Patnitop and Mantalai. It is located at a distance of around 3 kms from Sudh Mahadev temple. Gauri Kund is the name of the natural spring which is belived to have been used by the Goddess Parvati to bathe. To reach Gauri Kund, one has to trek around 1.5 km on the hill.

The spring is very small where the water oozes out naturally from the ground. There is an idol of Gauri (Parvati) placed near the spring. As per Hindu mythology, Parvati aka Gauri was born in Mantalai lake which is a nearby village. She used to take bathe in this spring (Gauri Kund) and offer prayers at Sudh Mahadev temple (which is again located near to this site).

Above the spring, there is a cave temple surrounded by modern day structure. The cave has the idols of Shiv and Parvati. Also, the naturally formed shapes of Ganesh (son of Gauri) and Parvati are also found inside the cave. It is believed that Gauri used to meditate in this cave. It is also believed that there is a path inside the cave which connects till Kashmir.

The structure outside the cave has a samadhi (tomb) of a saint and an idol of Parvati with four arms.

It's a serene and calm locality which looks awesome if visited during early morning or evening.

Happy travelling.
