Peer Khoh Cave Shrine - Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu, the capital city of Jammu and Kashmir state of India, is full of important temples. Hence, it is even referred as the city of temples. Peer Khoh Jambavanth cave shrine is one of the popular temples of Jammu city. It is located on the Circular Road in Jammu.

The cave temple consists of three caves. They are Nav Durga cave, Jambavan cave and Shivji cave. The main cave has Shiv Linga and also an idol for Ganesha. There is a small passage in this cave which is believed to be connecting  with Amarnath site. It is also believed that Jambavan (the bear character of Ramayana) entered through this passage before fighting with Lord Krishna. As the main shrine has Shiv Linga idol, this temple is considered as a Shiva temple. The connection of the cave with Jambavan brought the name "Jambavanth". There is an idol of Hanuman near the entrance of the main cave.

The second cave in this temple is named as Jambavan cave. It has the idols of Jambavan, Dharmaraj, Chitragupta, Goraknath, Krishna and Shiva-Parvati-Ganesh.

The third cave is Nav Durga cave which enshrines nine Goddesses - Nava Shaktis or Nava Kanyas. The entrance of the cave has few idols such as Ranganath (Vishnu in the reclining posture), Hanuman and Sai Baba.

Few shrines are built outside all these cave shrines. Ram-Lakshman-Sita shrine, Shiva shrine, Shiv Linga shrine along with the idols of Shiva-Parvati and Vishnu, the red colored idol of Ganesh, Shiv Linga under the tree and Shaneeswara idol are also found in the temple structure outside the cave shrine.
