Delhi, the capital city of India, is mainly famous for its historically rich sites. Raj Ghat is one of such sites having historical significance. Raj Ghat, located on the banks of the river Yamuna in Darya Ganj area of Delhi, is the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi.

Mahatma Gandhi, father of the nation, was cremated on 31st January 1948, a day after his assassination, in this place. Raj Ghat is designed very simple; a black marble platform marks the spot of Mahatma's cremation. Of late, it has become a custom for all the foreign delegates to visit Raj Ghat and pay tributes to the great leader of India.

Adjacent to Raj Ghat, there are samadhis (tombs) of other Indian leaders found. One remarkable feature of all these tombs is that all of them are very simple. If you visit the tombs of political leaders in South India, you can very appreciate this difference.

Let me briefly introduce the other samadhis/memorials in this site.

1) Shantivan, a large plinth covered with a lawn, is the samadhi of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India.

2) Adjacent to Shantivan, the samadhi of Sanjay Gandhi, the deceased son of Indira Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India, is found. He was an active political leader. Had he not died in an air accident in his young age, there was a possibility that he would have become the Prime Minister of India.

3) Vijay Ghat is the samadhi of Lal Bahadur Shastri, the second Prime Minister of India.

4) A huge greyish red monolithic stone marks Shakti Sthal, the samadhi of Indira Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India and daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru

5) Samta Sthal marks the samadhi of Jagjivan Ram, the former Deputy Prime Minister of India

6) Kisan Ghat is the samadhi of Charan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India.

7) Veer Bhumi is the site where the samadhi of Rajiv Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India and son of Indira Gandhi. The site has a large lotus in full bloom carved out of stone surrounded by 46 small lotuses to mark the years he lived. The rocks collected from all the Indian states are spread around.

8) Ekta Sthal is the samadhi of Giani Zail Singh, the former President of India.

9) Karma Bhumbi is the samadhi of Shankar Dayal Sharma, the former President of India. It is located near Vijay Ghat.

10) The samadhi of Devi Lal, the former Deputy Prime Minister of India, is located near Kisan Ghat.

Happy travelling.
