Tiruvannamalai is a religious town located in Tamil Nadu state of India. It is popular for its gigantic Annamalaiyar temple, Karthikai Deepam festival and Ramana Ashram. Let us explore about the holy site named Ramana Ashram in this article.

Introduction:

Thanks to Ramana Ashram for making Tiruvannamalai as one of the most popular destinations in India among the foreigners. Thousands of devotees from India and European countries visit Ramana Ashram everyday. There are many foreigners, who are attracted by Ramana Ashram, made Tiruvannamalai as their permanent accommodation. 

Ramana Ashram was the hermitage of the sage Sri Ramana Maharishi who lived in the beginning of the 20th century CE. He was very popular saint and had thousands and thousands of devotees and followers. His hermitage, where his samadhi shrine is enshrined, was slowly developed in the current form of Ramana Ashram. 

Ashram Layout:

Ramana Ashram is a huge complex with many halls, small shrines and the holy samadhis.

New Hall:

A large life-sized idol of Sri Ramana Maharishi is found in the New Hall. The devotees use this hall for daily prayers and bhajans.

Matrubhuteswara Temple:

It is a temple for Shiva Linga named as Matrubhuteswara. In the main shrine, along with Shiva Linga, Sri Chakra Meru is also found. Shiva Linga is installed above the samadhi of Maharishi's mother. The outer wall of the shrine has the niche images of Ganesha, Dakshinamurti, Lingodbhava, Brahma and Durga. The sub-shrines of Ganesha, Subramanya, Navagraha and Chandikeshwara are also found in this small temple. 

Ramana Maharishi's Samadhi:

Near Matrubhuteswara temple, the holy samadhi of Sri Ramana Maharishi is located. It is located inside a pillared mandapa.

Old Hall:

This is the place where Maharishi gave darshan to thousands of devotees. The couch used by the saint is found in this hall.

Garden:

Adjacent to the old hall, a small open space with few trees and plants is found.

Apart from the above mentioned places, the dining hall where hundreds of devotees are fed daily, Skandashram, Virupaksha cave, book store, library, Nirvana room, Gosala (cattle farm), Ved patshala and guest rooms are all located in this ashram.
